About Natural Family Planning

What is Natural Family Planning?

Natural Family Planning is a form of fertility awareness that uses biological signs such as hormones, cervical mucus, and basal body temperature to help women track their cycles, to help couples achieve pregnancy, and to help couples avoid pregnancy. It involves shared responsibility between the couple to understand how to learn about and live with the gift of fertility. NFP has been around since the beginning of time, but it is beginning to become more popular. There are many methods of NFP, including the calendar method, basal body temperature (BBT), the ovulation method (cervical mucus), the sympto-thermal method (a combination of the calendar method, BBT, and the ovulation method), and hormonal monitoring.

About the Marquette Method

In 1998, Marquette University’s Institute of Natural Family Planning developed a newer, more objective form of NFP that uses urine hormones and urine hormone devices to detect the urinary hormones of fertility. The monitor can assist those that are trying to achieve or avoid pregnancy, as well as for those that simply want to understand their menstrual cycle. What sets the Marquette Method apart from other forms of NFP is that it is extremely useful for women with special circumstances such as PCOS, breastfeeding, irregular cycles, and many more! Along with the Marquette Method, women also have the option to use other forms of NFP (BBT, cervical mucus, calendar method) to establish their days of fertility and infertility throughout their monthly cycle. The Marquette Method of NFP is only taught by health care professionals (BSN prepared nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and doctors) to ensure that clients are receiving instruction by those that have a full understanding behind the science NFP!
